Carlo Ancelotti admitted that Everton did not do well enough in their 2-1 loss to Newcastle.

After starting the season with four wins on the bounce, Everton have now gone three games without a victory. Albeit without some key players, they never really looked like beating Newcastle.

Callum Wilson’s brace put the hosts 2-0 up, the first goal coming via a penalty, before Dominic Calvert-Lewin claimed a consolation goal in stoppage time. It was not enough for Ancelotti’s side.

Speaking after the game, the Everton boss admitted that they were too slow until conceding the first goal.

“It was not a good performance,” he told Sky Sports. “The game was imbalanced.

“They opened the score and we were slow in the counter. The game is changed after the first goal. We wake up after but our performance was not good.

“The penalty was clear. Nothing to say.

“We knew what this kind of game would be like. We didn’t have opportunities.

“We needed to continue and not let them have a gift. We had a good reaction to 2-0 down but it was not enough.”

Ancelotti explains goalkeeping situation

Ancelotti gave a debut to Robin Olsen in goal, taking Jordan Pickford out of the firing line. Despite being unable to keep a clean sheet, the Swede made a couple of decent saves.

However, Ancelotti already confirmed before the game that Pickford would be back in place for the next game. Clarifying his position afterwards, the Everton boss insists he has two equally balanced keepers to choose from.

“Robin (Olsen) did well. He did his job,” he added. “He deserves to play. Jordan will be back.

“We have two really good keepers and this is what we need. Robin will play again. I don’t know when but next game, Jordan will be back.

“We need to recover some players who are injured. But we need to be focused. It is a moment that we suffer a bit after a good start.”
