Diego Maradona, who captained his country to World Cup glory in 1986, has died at the age of 60, the Argentine Football Association has announced.

The former Argentina, Barcelona and Napoli great is reported to have had a cardiac arrest at home.

Maradona had undergone successful surgery on a brain blood clot earlier this month. But he was also being treated for alcohol dependency.

Widely regarded as one of the great players of all time, his finest hour came at the World Cup finals in 1986.

He scored five goals in the tournament including two against England in the quarter-finals.

The first was the infamous ‘hand of god’ that put Argentina in front. But the second was sheer genius as he ran from near the halfway line, waltzed past the England defence and slotted past Peter Shilton.

Maradona also scored two brilliant goals in the semi-final against Belgium. And he set up the late winner for Jorge Burruchaga in a dramatic 3-2 win over West Germany in the final.

Stars pay tribue to Argentine legend

“By some distance the best player of my generation and arguably the greatest of all time.

“After a blessed but troubled life, hopefully he’ll finally find some comfort in the hands of God. #RipDiego”.

Former Spain goalkeeper and fellow World Cup winner Iker Casillas added his condolences

He said it was a “sad day for football”, describing Maradona as a “genius of this sport”.
