A Giroud goal enough to give Chelsea the win

A fixture at the Stamford Bridge saw third-placed Chelsea go up against an already relegated Norwich City.

Chelsea who was looking to solidify their position on the table made some changes to the side that lost against Sheffield United in the weekend clash, defenders Christensen and James were replaced by Marco Alonso and Antonio Rudiger, a lineup change in the midfield saw English men Ross Barkley and Mason Mount sit on the bench for Croatian Mateo Kovacic and Reuben Loftus-Cheek, the front line saw French man Olivier Giroud headline the attack in place of Tammy Abraham.

Norwich having been relegated had nothing to lose in the match but Coach Daniel Farke still made some changes to the side that suffered a 4 – 0 defeat at home to West Ham. Multiple changes in the midfield saw Kenny McLean, Lukas Rupp, and Todd Cantwell replace Mario Vrancic, Emi Buendia, and Marco Stiepermann, Striker Timo Pukki was replaced up front by Josip Drmic.

A dominant Chelsea side started the game with an attack at opposition’s goal but the chance was headed wide by Reuben Loftus-Cheek who failed to find the back of the net. While the Chelsea side controlled more than half of the possession, there was still no goal to report after the first 40 minutes. The game however came to life in the third minute of the additional time for the first half, as a cross from the left by Christian Pulisic found the head of Olivier Giroud, who delivered effortlessly to give Chelsea the lead. The goal was the only action of the first half.

The second started off with Chelsea being in control of the ball a cross from Willian was not converted by the blues defender Antonio Rudiger. Play was stopped in the 50th minute as an injured played laid on the field. Both sides were unable to find the back of the net as the second half produced no goals and the match ended in favor of the blues as they secure a crucial home win.

Chelsea still their position in third place but have now gone 4 points clear of fourth-placed Leicester City to keep their Champions League dreams alive. Norwich look forward to ending the season on a bright note and face what awaits them in the EFL.
