Celtic are ready to offer James McCarthy a contract in January in the hope of persuading him to make the move to his beloved Parkhead, TEAMtalk can reveal.
McCarthy has grown up a lifelong Celtic supporter and the club have a huge interest in securing his signature. Indeed, the 30-year-old is seen as the heir apparent to current captain Scott Brown.
Celtic are hoping that McCarthy will be lured back to his hometown of Glasgow.
The Republic of Ireland international has not played in Scotland since leaving Hamilton Academical back in 2009. But he could be heading back north of the border – although he may have to accept a wage drop.
Celtic are ready to offer him a long-term deal that could help sway him.
McCarthy currently has interest from not only current club Palace but a number of other sides, including Burnley and Aston Villa.
As technically a foreign club Celtic can officially open talks with McCarthy in January.
And should he agree a contract with them, the hope will be that they can agree a deal with Palace for him to move before the summer.
Spurs ready to move for Palace strike target
Jose Mourinho is thinking about bringing Mainz striker Jean-Philippe Mateta to Tottenham next season, according to reports.
Mateta has enjoyed a strong start to the season in the Bundesliga, scoring seven goals in his first eight games. He has also provided one assist, and has hat-tricks to his name in both the league and cup – including a 38-minute treble in his most recent appearance.
Only Robert Lewandowski and Erling Haaland have scored more goals than Mateta in the Bundesliga so far this season. He is in good company.
The 23-year-old was Mainz’s record signing when he joined them in 2018, and he has been repaying his price tag. He scored 14 goals from 36 games in his first season, before a quieter second campaign.
He is back in form now, though, and is averaging a goal every 88 minutes in the Bundesliga. It has put his name on the radar of several clubs.
According to Calciomercato, Tottenham could rival Napoli for his signature next summer.
Mateta, who was linked with Crystal Palace over the summer, would be a prime option if he continues his current form throughout the season. Read more…
