Former Tottenham favourite Christian Eriksen could return to the club if out-of-favour Dele Alli leaves during the January transfer window.

Alli has regularly been linked with a move away from North London with game time under Jose Mourinho limited.

The 24-year-old has made just four Premier League appearances this term, with three of those from the bench. He was also an unused substitute in Spurs’ League Cup semi-final win over Brentford on Tuesday.

But despite reports that Tottenham aren’t looking to sell him this month, speculation over a move to PSG continue to circulate. The French champions also held an interest in the summer market too.

The arrival of Mauricio Pochettino, Alli’s former boss, at the Parc des Princes has also strengthened those rumours. Pochettino signed Alli for Tottenham and helped develop him into one of the top players in the league.

That particular factor could push the Englishman towards Ligue 1 as he looks to breathe new life into his career. PSG are also believed to be confident of getting a deal done.

Eriksen a possible replacement

Should that happen one player who could take his place in Mourinho’s squad is Eriksen, according to Gazzetta Dello Sport (via Football Italia).

The Dane only left Spurs last January to join Inter Milan, but things have not worked out for him in Italy. He has been limited to just nine outings in 2020/21 with manager Antonio Conte not fancying him in his set-up.

Inter director Beppe Marotta has also remarked on several occasions that Eriksen is not “functional” in the team.

Therefore, Eriksen is available for transfer and that could see Spurs move to bring him back. The Italian report claims that a move is ‘on the cards’, especially if Alli does depart.

He enjoyed a productive spell at Tottenham, scoring 69 and assisting 89 goals in 305 appearances. Similar to Alli, he is looking to rediscover his best form and a return to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium could help him achieve that.

There will be plenty of competition for Eriksen though, with clubs around Europe linked. That includes fellow Premier League teams Arsenal, Everton and Wolves.
