Liverpool have been told they should make a move for Premier League centre-back Shkodran Mustafi.
Pundit and former Tottenham midfielder Jermaine Jenas believes Jurgen Klopp needs to make a stop-gap defensive signing.
The champions were plunged into more defensive chaos on Thursday after both Fabinho and Joel Matip picked up injuries.
Make-shift defender Fabinho succumbed to a “minor muscle injury” before the game. Jurge Klopp claimed the injury had come out of the blue, while he then suffered a hammer blow with Matip being forced off at half-time.
Klopp admitted it look “like something serious” with Matip appearing to damage his ankle. Nat Phillips replaced him and he partnered Jordan Henderson in the second half at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Klopp though could be forced into the market over the weekend and admitted as such in his post-match press conference.
“We need to find the right player, we have players, not a lot in the defensive line, it is incredible what is happening there, really incredible,” said Klopp.
And Jenas thinks Arsenal defender Mustafi would fit the bill.
“Let’s just say that stopgap was Sokratis who came in, or Mustafi,” said Jenas. “A centre-half out there who’s not getting a game.
“Are Liverpool fans going to be happy about it?”
“Is Jurgen Klopp looking at that and saying, ‘I’ve got an actual centre-half and this is better than Fabinho and Matip, or Henderson and Fabinho?
“Is it better, that stopgap, than what you’ve already got?”
Sokratis this week signed for Olympiakos after being linked with Liverpool.
Mustafi not wanted
Whether or not Mustafi, 28, is on Klopp’s radar remains to be seen.
Mustafi, who has made over 100 Premier League appearances, has only played nine times in all competitions for Mikel Arteta’s men this season.
Despite that game time he is not viewed as having a long-term future in north London.
According to Football London, Arsenal are in talks with Mustafi over terminating his contract.
The report adds that Arteta wants the Germany international gone to free up space for new signings.
The player’s contract was due to expire in June anyway. With that in mind, it would not be a big financial loss for the Gunners.
Mustafi signed for Arsenal from Valencia in 2016 for £35m.
