Jurgen Klopp praised the adaptability of his Liverpool team for playing in a different formation against Manchester City.

Klopp chose all four of his star forwards for Liverpool, with Diogo Jota keeping his place after scoring a Champions League hat-trick in midweek. Roberto Firmino came back into the lineup, alongside Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah.

The system resembled a 4-2-4, or a 4-4-2, with Jota and Mane on the wings and Firmino and Salah up front.

It was Salah who gave them the lead via a first half penalty, but Gabriel Jesus scored an equaliser to earn City a point.

The first half was played at a high intensity, but things faded somewhat after the break. Hence, the two titles rivals had to settle for a point each.

After the game, Klopp enthused about the energy shown from both sides – praising his own for limiting the number of chances their hosts had.

He told Sky Sports: “Super football game to be honest. Two top teams ready for a massive fight – energy levels of both teams incredible.

“You could see after 10-15 mins everybody breathing (uh huhhh!). I’m really happy – City’s lowest number of chances against us.

“We had counter attacking moments. So many. We obviously didn’t finish it off which is a shame.

“To change a system to play City… the boys are ready to listen, adapt and perform. In a lot of moments we could have created bigger chances.

“We were really good and dangerous. We were ready to make little passes – there were moments we played too many long balls. Time to time we just wanted to get rid of the ball.

“Footballing-wise lots of good moments. Robbo (Andy Robertson) could go 95 mins – energy level was incredible.”

‘A proper compliment’

In a separate interview with BBC Sport, Klopp elaborated on his pleasure at not conceding many chances.

However, he admitted that City’s quality made it hard for them to maintain their usual levels of intensity.

He added: “The plan is always to start fast, stay fast and finish fast but that is not always possible. City is a top team.

“I think it is the game with the lowest number of chances for City so far when we have played them. Clear cut chances – they didn’t have many and that is a proper compliment for the boys.”
