Two more clubs have joined the race for Georginio Wijnaldum, according to a report – prompting Jurgen Klopp to urge the Liverpool board to give him a new contract.

Wijnaldum was heavily linked with a move away from Anfield over the summer, with his contract due to expire in June 2021.

Barcelona were the main suitor for the midfielder, who played under Ronald Koeman at international level for the Netherlands. And Koeman has made no secret of his desire to reunite with Wijnaldum at Camp Nou.

“Our interest for Wijnaldum is strong,” he said earlier this month.

“I wanted to bring him here in the summer because he has the ability to make fantastic runs from midfield and turn up in the box at the right moments.

“I am convinced he can really add something to the team. But the financial situation of Barcelona was known at his club.”

Eventually, the 29-year-old stayed at Liverpool, even though the arrival of Thiago Alcantara added competition for his place. However, time is still ticking down on Wijnaldum’s contract.

According to 90min, Liverpool boss Klopp remains desperate to keep the Dutchman, and has made his feelings clear to the club’s owners.

Klopp wants Liverpool to give Wijnaldum a new, long-term contract to secure his future. Unless they act quickly, he could negotiate a pre-contract agreement with a foreign club in January.

There will be no shortage of suitors for the former Newcastle star, either. Barcelona retain their interest in the player and could re-enter talks.

They are not the only ones, though. The report adds that Inter Milan and Paris Saint-Germain have also expressed an interest.

Liverpool and Wijnaldum disagree over wages

Wijnaldum would prefer to stay at Liverpool, but is no closer to agreeing terms over a renewal. He would reportedly like wages of around £120,000-per-week, which is around double what he currently earns.

The Anfield hierarchy are reluctant to agree to such a rise, especially at this stage of his career. However, they could offer him a lower salary with more lucrative bonuses.

Klopp has insisted to his superiors that Wijnaldum is worth it, though. The Liverpool boss feels he has five years left at the top of his game and remains a leader for the club.

Furthermore, Klopp feels Wijnaldum would still be worth £60m in the transfer market if he was on a longer contract.

Therefore, he remains adamant that Liverpool should try to extend Wijnaldum’s stay with the club.
