Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp says that Virgil van Dijk’s continuing recovery from his knee injury is looking “very good” but has warned about his lengthy absence.

The defender has not played since the middle of October after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament. As such, he underwent surgery and there is no time frame for his return.

Indeed, he is likely to miss most of the remainder of the season at the least.

Nevertheless, the Dutchman has posted regular updates on social media documenting his rehabilitation. His latest post showed him working on an exercise bike, while he has also been lifting weights to build up the resistance in his knee.

Speaking to liverpoolfc.com, Klopp offered his latest update on Van Dijk’s progress. While he relayed hope about his star player’s progress, he warned that the centre-back remains far from a return.

“Good, very good. I have no problem with talking about Virgil van Dijk,” the manager said when asked about his progress.

“It’s very good but still a long way to go, that’s this kind of injury.

“I’m happy when I see these videos, to be honest, because it just shows that he makes good progress. But it will still take a lot of time, that’s how it is.

“I would like to say something else but these are the facts, unfortunately.”

Netherlands legend Clarence Seedorf recently joined Van Dijk in his rehabilitation and relayed similar positive news.

Seedorf wrote on Instagram: “I joined the captain Virgil van Dijk for some training today.

“Happy to see his determination and hard work to be back on the pitch stronger than before!

“In these type of journeys, patience and focus are key to succeed. Keep it up my brother!”

The injuries to Van Dijk and fellow centre-backs Joe Gomez and Joel Matip have left Klopp short of options at the back.

Indeed, defensive midfielder Fabinho has had to drop back and has been joined by Nathaniel Phillips and Rhys Williams.

However, one Liverpool legend has stressed that Klopp must not rely on the latter two players.
