Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp looks to a former Dortmund star to bolster his ranks, while Leeds receive a boost over a winger target – both in the latest Euro Paper Talk.
KLOPP EYES FORMER DORTMUND MAN
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is thinking signing ex-Borussia Dortmund defender Neven Subotic before Monday’s transfer deadline, according to a report.
The Reds have suffered harshly with injuries at the back this season. Indeed, Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez are long-term absentees after picking up knee injuries earlier in the season.
What’s more, Liverpool came into this month’s window with no senior centre-back options available; Joel Matip encountered a groin problem just after Christmas.
As such, speculation has mounted throughout the month that Liverpool could rectify their shortage. Klopp, though, has consistently maintained that the money is not there to spend.
In contrast, he has backed up reports that he does not want a quick fix which will not benefit his squad in the long-term.
However, according to Don Balon, Subotic’s recent availability has alerted the manager. The Serbian centre-back signed a deal with Turkish side Denizlispor in September but recently terminated his contract.
Therefore, he is a free agent and despite fitting into the quick-fix category that Klopp has ruled out, the German may feel tempted given his long-standing association with the 32-year-old.
Klopp coached Subotic while he was manager at Mainz and took the centre-back with him to Dortmund. From there, the former Serbia international played a vital role as Dortmund won two Bundesliga titles and reached the Champions League final.
Subotic made 263 appearances for the German giants and has played 36 times for his country.
