Liverpool remain on stand by to prise Kylian Mbappe away from PSG – but one in-the-know transfer expert fully expects him to sign a contract extension with the Ligue 1 giants.
The World Cup winner has just 18 months left on his deal with Paris Saint-Germain and talks are underway over an extension.
The 22-year-old is regularly linked with moves to Real Madrid, while Liverpool are also said to be in the hunt. Indeed, a report last week claimed the Reds had a calculated financial plan to lure the France forward to Anfield.
Those links have been strengthened with Mbappe regularly expressing his admiration for Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool.
It has been stated that Klopp has a “direct line” with the World Cup winner after trying to sign him in 2017.
However, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reckons Mbappe will sign a new deal with PSG with talks well advanced.
He states that, armed with an unlimited pot of cash, PSG can persuade him to stay.
“He’s negotiating with Paris Saint-Germain,” Romano told Give Me Sport.
“He’s negotiating, and Paris Saint-Germain’s president (Nasser) Al-Khelaifi, is always so optimistic. And, you know, having a lot of money makes it so easy to try (to tie Mbappe down to a new deal).
“But obviously, it’s up to the player to find an agreement on a contract. When you talk with players like Mbappe, like Neymar, it is not a normal contract.”
Romano is adamant that Liverpool, among all the top clubs across Europe, will make a move should PSG’s talks with Mbappe prove unsuccessful.
“If Mbappe will not stay at Paris, obviously, we will have all top clubs trying,” Romano added. “But I won’t mention Liverpool or Barcelona, or others, or Real Madrid. That’s because all the top clubs will be ready to try for Mbappe.”

Alexander-Arnold offered no sympathy
Liverpool legend Steve Nicol has warned Trent Alexander-Arnold that he has a “tonne” of improvement to do in the defensive side of his game.
The Reds have suffered a drop-off in form of late, winning only two of their previous six Premier League games.
Several issues have been touted as the cause. Indeed, a lack of killer instinct from forwards Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah has not helped.
However, Alexander-Arnold has also faced criticism of late; the England international gave the ball away 38 times against Southampton, the most of any player in any game this season.
But while Nicol admits that the right-back’s struggles going forward are not entirely his doing, he has told the player that he must get his act together when defending.
“I think he definitely has to improve defensively, no question,” the pundit told ESPN FC.
“I think going forward, recent games, it’s been difficult for him. He normally has space to put the ball in. But because of the way the opposition has played he’s put the ball into a box that’s full of, what, two teams basically, you’re talking 14 players.
“That makes it tough for him going forward. No question defensively, he has to improve a tonne.”
