Frank Lampard is now “under serious threat” of losing his job as Chelsea manager, according to a report.

Chelsea have lost four of their last six games in the Premier League, with their struggles continuing with a 3-1 defeat to Manchester City on Sunday.

Consequently, the pressure is growing on Lampard. The manager was backed heavily in the summer transfer market, but despite a promising start to the season, things don’t seem to be clicking.

Chelsea have not been shy to dismiss managers in recent years. Even though Lampard is held in high regard for his achievements as a player, the club may have a tough decision to make.

According to The Athletic, Lampard’s job is now “under serious threat” after the defeat to City.

The report claims there are “tensions” between the manager and some of his players. Lampard is said to have a “group of trusted regular starters”, with the players outside that group not happy with his man management.

There are also concerns about the struggles of summer investments Kai Havertz and Timo Werner. The German duo have been struggling to repay their hefty price tags.

Those are just two factors in the club’s concerns. The most obvious, though, is their downturn in results.

Chelsea have won just three of their last 10 games in all competitions. They have now slipped to eighth in the Premier League table.

The report continues by claiming that Chelsea are already looking at potential replacements for Lampard. They know he would not be too costly to dismiss.

Should the current state of form continue, the club may act. However, if Chelsea can resurrect their form from earlier in the season, Lampard could stay until the end of the season.

There is no timeframe for a decision, but the next three league games against Fulham, Leicester and Wolves could be pivotal. Chelsea will show no sympathy if their slump continues.

The report adds that Chelsea would have considered Mauricio Pochettino as a replacement had he still been available.

Instead, the former Tottenham boss has taken over at Paris Saint-Germain. That will force Chelsea to look elsewhere.

It is claimed that the main candidate on their list of potential replacements is Massimiliano Allegri. The Italian has been out of work since leaving Juventus, with whom he won five consecutive league titles, in 2019.

He would be a high-profile appointment for Chelsea if they decide to part ways with Lampard.

The 42-year-old, though, has suggested that good things could still be in store for the Blues if they show the right reaction.

“I’ve sat there and had these days and then lifted a trophy at the end of the year,” he said after the City defeat.

“We bounced back then because we had a spirit in the dressing room and any player in football will have periods like that.

“Some other defeats for other teams have been painful. We have to take it on the chin, this is football.”
