Liverpool could miss out on the signing of Jeremy Doku after French side Rennes launched a massive bid for his services.
Doku has two years left on his current deal amid reports that Liverpool have renewed their interest in him.
The Reds are allegedly considering making the 18-year-old Anderlecht’s club-record sale, ahead of Youri Tielemans.
The latest speculation comes after Liverpool passed up the opportunity to sign Doku earlier in his teenage years. The player travelled to Anfield to meet senior club figures, but a move there did not materialise.
Doku – by many accounts – is the man Jurgen Klopp reportedly sees as the long-term heir to Sadio Mane in the Reds attack.
Capped already by Belgium, the teenager is expected to have a stellar career in the game.
As such, and amid the renewed interest, HLN claims Anderlecht are keen to tie Doku down to a new contract.
However, Liverpool’s vision of bringing Doku to Anfield could have hit a major snag after Rennes made their move.
The Ligue 1 side are gearing up for the Champions League this season and have moved to add the Belgian to their ranks. Armed with cash from the sale of Edouard Mendy to Chelsea, Foot Mercato report Rennes have made a tentative opening approach.
Rennes’ opening gambit is thought to fall short of Anderlecht’s valuation, however, which may give Liverpool hope.
While an approach this window looks highly unlikely, Michael Edwards and Co are planning to keep a close eye on his development amid a potential future raid.
However, a move to Rennes would likely end their hopes of signing Doku, for now at least, on the cheap.
‘Crazy offer’ required for Anderlecht to sell Doku
Anderlecht’s CEO has previously suggested it would take a “crazy offer” for his side to lose Doku this transfer window.
Karel van Eetvelt said: “Scared? Never. Only at a Belgian club you can never say that something is impossible.
“If, say, Liverpool suddenly come up with a crazy offer, you have to look at it. How much?
“I prefer not to talk about figures, but AA Gent set the tone with [Jonathan] David’s [sale to Lille].
“To be clear: for now, only the media is speculating about Doku and Liverpool.”
