Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Liverpool are not prioritising a new contract for Mohamed Salah, but remain “calm” about his future.

Salah has regularly been the subject of transfer gossip ever since his astonishing first season with Liverpool in 2017-18.

The Egypt international has proven himself as one of the best goalscorers in European football. Hence, as successful as Liverpool have been, there are claims that he could leave for a club like Real Madrid.

Indeed, there have been some confusing claims about the player’s own wishes. It still seems likely he will stay at Liverpool, though.

Salah remains under contract at Anfield until 2023, so Liverpool are not in a particular hurry to hold talks with him. Although, that may have to change if Real Madrid start showing more serious interest.

Now, Romano has confirmed that the world’s biggest clubs are interested in Salah, but that negotiations over a new deal with Liverpool are yet to reach a conclusion.

He told Give Me Sport: “In this moment, interest? For sure, because, obviously, we’re talking about a fantastic player so it’s impossible for any club not to be interested in him.

“But at the moment, there is nothing advanced with this agent or with Liverpool. Liverpool have not received anything from these clubs, so they were a bit surprised.

“But they know that what Salah said is, ‘one day I would like to play in these clubs’, (and this) is normal because we’re talking about two major clubs, Real Madrid and Barcelona, also to change leagues.

“His agent is negotiating with the club to understand what’s going on for the (new) contract. They are not negotiating right now but, for sure, the concept of Salah will be something they talk about, like in the next year.

“So we will see, but, for sure, at the moment, Liverpool are really calm about the situation of Salah. They are happy with him and they are concentrating more on other players like Fabinho, Van Dijk, extending their contracts and then we will see what’s going on with Salah.”

Liverpool want to make Fabinho ‘untouchable’

Fabinho TEAMtalk

Indeed, reports last month indicated how keen Liverpool were to keep hold of Fabinho as a main priority.

The Brazilian has impressed since joining the club from Monaco in 2018. This season, he has taken on a greater role of responsibility, covering for the injured Van Dijk at centre-back.

Naturally a midfielder, Fabinho has impressed in the role. His performances have cemented his status as a key man for Liverpool.

Therefore, it is no surprise that the champions want to retain his services in the long-term. Like Salah, he is also under contract until 2023, but Liverpool want to tie him down to a longer deal to make him “untouchable”.

Romano also confirmed last month that Liverpool wanted to open talks with Van Dijk over an extension to his deal, which also runs until 2023.

While the defender is unable to play, the club are planning to utilise the opportunity to discuss his future.
