Liverpool have been told they do not need to bring in Bayern Munich centre-back David Alaba in the January transfer window.

The Anfield outfit have been linked with a number of top names since Virgil van Dijk suffered an ACL injury, including Alaba, Dayot Upamecano and Kalidou Koulibaly.

However, the likes of Joel Matip and Fabinho have so far proved able deputies to the talismanic Dutchman. Youngsters Nat Phillips and Rhys Williams have also shown their potential when when called upon.

And former Reds midfielder Jason McAteer is confident that Liverpool have the strength in depth to cope with Van Dijk’s absence.

He said: “When Virgil van Dijk got injured everyone started to panic, saying that Liverpool need to bring a top-quality centre half.

“Jurgen (Klopp) remained calm and knew that if they brought in a world class defender, the likes of Alaba, you are going to have to pay a lot of money, certainly in this inflated market.

“When everyone is fit, if you have got four top centre halves, Alaba, Gomez, van Dijk and Matip and then Fabinho as cover.

“When Klopp picks his team, he can only pick two from five, one goes on the bench that’s three, he’s got two that he has to leave out.

“Liverpool don’t want to be paying a lot of money on wages to keep unhappy players that can’t make the squad, it has to be the right balance.

“They have enough players of real quality that can slot into the defence, even with Virgil van Dijk out, so they (Liverpool) don’t currently need another top centre back to come in.”

Alaba has also been linked with Premier League rivals Manchester United, and it appears certain he will be on the move in the new year.

Burnley star tipped for Anfield switch

Despite that opinion from McAteer, another former Reds star in Chris Kirkland thinks that Klopp should take a look at Burnley centre-back James Tarkowski as a solid back-up option.

The former Anfield stopper thinks the 27-year-old may be a useful home-grown addition, telling FootballFanCast, as cited by Goal: “Obviously there was a lot of talk about Tarkowski at Burnley.

“I like him, I think he’s decent. You can’t go, ‘well will he do what Van Dijk does?’ Because that’s impossible, nobody does that.” Read more…
