Liverpool and England defender Joe Gomez fears he could miss the European Champions next summer with his knee injury, according to a report.

The Daily Mail reports that the 23-year-old is fearing the worst-case scenario, which would also end his domestic campaign.

Indeed, earlier reports suggested Liverpool were preparing for a ‘lengthy’ lay-off due to a ‘significant’ injury.

The incident happened at England’s St George’s Park training base, ahead of a friendly match on Thursday.

There was a nervous wait for news after the reports broke on Wednesday afternoon. But England boss Gareth Southgate admitted that it was “not a good situation”.

He told a press conference: “What was upsetting was to see was that he was in a fair bit of pain and there was nobody around him when the injury happened. I didn’t like that element of it.

“We have to wait and see what the scans show and we are all hopeful for him that it is not what it might be.”

Sat next to him in the press briefing was Three Lions goalkeeper Nick Pope. The Burnley stopper offered his own perspective on how Gomez suffered the injury.

“He made a pass or a movement with no-one around him and ended up on the floor, obviously in distress or in pain,” the 28-year-old said.

“As a football player being on the pitch you know when something doesn’t seem right so you could see he was in a great deal of pain.

“When you see one of your friends or teammates go through that it’s not easy so it wasn’t easy for me or any of the lads.”

Gomez injury woes go on

The Daily Mail adds that Gomez is reportedly “heartbroken” at the injury, the latest in a string of problems.

Indeed, the centre-back has a history of serious injuries, missing almost eight months with a cruciate ligament problem in October 2015.

Since then, he has had Achilles tendon trouble, as well as a leg fracture he picked up against Burnley in December 2018.
