Pep Guardiola claimed that Cheltenham Town were better than Manchester City in the box after they gave his side a scare in the FA Cup fourth round.

City went into the game as huge favourites, as a Premier League side met an opponent from League Two.

But it was Cheltenham who went in front, and it took until the last 10 minutes for City to get back in the game.

Eventually their quality and fitness shone through, as they scored three goals to book their place in the next round. But overall, the game was far more complicated than Guardiola would have liked.

He told BBC Sport: “I didn’t have regrets even when we were 1-0 down, we had clear chance from the first minute. When they take advantage it gets complicated but we got it to 1-1 and it was tight.

“We came here with humility and had the quality to make the difference.

“They used their quality in the box, they are taller and better than us there and we showed clips on how to solve it. It is difficult to control that.”

Foden full of confidence

City’s comeback was set in motion when Phil Foden scored an equaliser in the 81st minute. It was a deserved moment for a player who stood out on the day – as he has done often in recent weeks.

Guardiola pointed to the England international’s confidence and finishing ability as two reasons why he is going through a successful spell.

“Phil Foden is in a great moment and with great confidence. He is clinical in front of goal and he had a similar chance to the goal we scored at Stamford Bridge and he is playing really well.”

City have now won 10 games in a row in all competitions and could go top of the Premier League with a win over West Brom in their next match.

Guardiola is taking nothing for granted, though, and will prepare for the challenge like any other.

“Next one is West Brom, big Sam Allardyce has incredible experience and one step at a time.”
