Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho should have sent new signing Joe Rodon back to Swansea on loan to allow him to develop, according to one pundit.

With the domestic transfer window open until Friday, Spurs used the time to chase a deal for the centre-back.

Indeed despite concerns about the move throughout negotiations, Tottenham got the signing over the line by 5pm.

Rodon arrives at Spurs having established a reputation as a promising young defender. He was a core part of Swansea’s setup and has become a regular Wales international.

However Kevin Phillips thinks Mourinho would have been better allowing the 22-year-old to develop further with Steve Cooper’s side before offering him a chance in north London.

Asked if Rodon should have earned another loan move, Phillips told Football InsiderYes, definitely. For me I think Tottenham have made some good signings.

“I know that area (centre-back) is obviously what has been identified to strengthen. Can he go and make an impact straight away? It’s a big ask.

“Common sense would probably suggest bring the player in and loan him straight back to give him more experience.”

Phillips adds that Rodon would be better prepared to fit in at Spurs with further development elsewhere.

‘Rodon needs further development’

“At the start of next season or maybe in January when he’s played a few more games then maybe bring him back and have a look at him,” he added.

“I think the obvious one is secure the player first and then send him back out on loan and let him develop as a player.

“All of sudden you have a brilliant player on your hands who doubles in money or trebles in money and also performs for your team for the next four, five, six, seven years.”

Rodon is one of several players Spurs added to their squad in recent months, the highlight being Gareth Bale.

Mourinho admitted in Friday’s press conference that he did not expect as much success in the transfer market.
