Newcastle have been boosted in their attempt to sign Leicester’s Hamza Choudhury on loan, with Foxes chief Brendan Rodgers confident he can sign a replacement.
The Magpies have made no secret of the desire to bring in loan players this month. Mike Ashley made it clear there would be no permanent signings and Steve Bruce has been scouring the loan market.
He has spoken to Rodgers about Choudhury, who has barely featured for Leicester this season. The Leicester manager appears open to letting the former England Under-21 ace leave.
But his exit is dependent on the East Midlanders bringing in a new attacking midfielder before the window closes. Asked whether that was likely to be the case, Rodgers concurred.
“Yes. It’ll be good for the team, we have a gap there so the club will work hard at looking to get someone in,” he said. “Our idea is to get a midfield player. If we can do that, then great.”
Choudhury, 23, enjoyed 10 Premier League starts among 20 appearances in 2019-2020. But he is now down the pecking order at the King Power Stadium.
Newcastle are desperate for help this month after a dreadful run of form. They did stop the bleeding with a 2-0 win at Everton on Saturday.
The Tynesiders sit 15th in the table but are eight points above the relegation zone.
Leicester have been linked with many players to fill the void left by Dennis Praet’s injury. They are thought to be keen on a deal for Watford midfielder Nathaniel Chalobah.
Rodgers added: “I know Nathaniel from my time working with him at Chelsea, but I know lots of players and there are a number of players that we’re looking at.”

Reports over the weekend linked Newcastle with a move for Paris Saint-Germain’s Idrissa Gueye on loan. The north-east outfit are looking for a loan deal until the end of the season.
Having played for Aston Villa as well as the Toffees, the 31-year-old has plenty of experience of English football. L’Equipe reported that Newcastle have made contact over a possible loan signing.
Gueye is open to a Premier League return but is not keen on joining Newcastle. It is thought the clubs have agreed a deal but the Senegal international has yet to decide.
He has made 16 Ligue 1 appearances for the Parisians in 2020-2021.
