Timothy Fosu-Mensah has revealed how he helped convince Donny van de Beek to join Manchester United this summer.

United won the race for the highly-coveted van de Beek in August. However, he has had to be patient in his first few months at Old Trafford.

Van de Beek is starting to get more opportunities now, having started United’s last two Premier League games. He is yet to add to the goal he scored on his debut, though.

Hope remains at Old Trafford that van de Beek will start showing the quality that convinced them to sign him on a more regular basis.

There were several clubs in the hunt for the Dutchman in the summer, including the likes of Real Madrid. However, it was United who eventually got to call him their own.

When the transfer went through, he became the second Dutch player in the current United squad, joining his compatriot Fosu-Mensah.

Now, Fosu-Mensah has revealed that he spoke with van de Beek before his compatriot joined the club.

“I told him United is a big club, if not the biggest club,” Fosu-Mensah told manutd.com.

“I said it’s good if you have the opportunity to come here. We have got very good team-mates, the quality is very good here.

“I said, ‘It’s up to you because I can’t make the decision for you but it’s a very good club’. At the end of the day it was his decision.”

As mentioned, van de Beek has not quite lived up to expectations yet. But Fosu-Mensah is among those who are convinced his impact will be positive in the end.

“He’s a good player, a player with a lot of qualities and I think he’s also a good guy so he’ll bring a lot of positive things to the club.”

Fosu-Mensah glad to have Dutch teammate

Fosu-Mensah has also been struggling to show his best side at United in recent years, as he has had few opportunities.

The 22-year-old has begun to see a little more action on the pitch, though, as he looks to fulfil his journey with the club he joined as an academy player from van de Beek’s former club Ajax in 2014.

Now, he has another Dutch player with an Ajax past alongside him at Old Trafford. Fosu-Mensah is proud of the journey both he and van de Beek have been on.

“It feels good,” he added.

“It’s special also because we’ve seen each other since we were so small, growing up and then I left when I was 16. He was still at Ajax but we always had good contact with each other.

“When I left for United, I still played for the national youth teams in the Netherlands, the Under-17s, Under-18s, Under-19s, Under-21s, and he was always there. So it’s very special to see him now at Manchester United.”
